Cloud's Guide to Winning AWT6
Hello and welcome! I'm probably sealing my fate by writing this guide, but I figured I'd help out all of you who want to participate in Amiibo Dan's tournaments. If you don't know the rules, it's Pokémon-themed. You can enter Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Mewtwo, Lucario, Charizard, or Greninja. Unfortunately, Explosive perfect shield is once again banned. I still don't believe it to be broken at all. I wrote up a whole article on it, but that's not important right now. So, you can only enter one of six characters, and none of them are noticeably strong or weak relative to the rest of the Pokémon reps...until you realize that Smash Balls are on low. This is a huge problem.
Jigglypuff's Final Smash is essentially useless - not only is it weak, but her opponent can simply take a few steps back and they'll completely dodge the attack. Charizard's is decent; it allows him to fly around and spit fire and charge into foes, but again, a dodge-savvy opponent will have no problems avoiding damage. Greninja's is very strong, but it's a trapping Final Smash - he kicks a mat up, and if it misses, no Final Smash for him. It doesn't help that amiibo are good at dodging stuff like that when trained to. Lucario's Final Smash is really bad - he'll act exactly the same as usual when using it, and he'll still play defense even though he's invincible. With Lucario, it's less about gaining an advantage by getting the Smash Ball, it's more about "get the Smash Ball so the opponent doesn't get to use their final smash". Mewtwo's is pretty good. It can be dodged, but it is very powerful if it connects.
So wait, how is Smash Balls being on a huge problem? Because it destroys any sense of balance this Pokémon-only metagame would have. It allows Pikachu, who has the best Final Smash of any Pokémon character, to gain a very large advantage. Sure, Dan thinks Explosive perfect shield is broken (which it isn't), but not Final Smashes? To add to that, why would you turn Smash Balls on when one character's Final Smash is significantly better than others? When Pikachu uses Volt Tackle, he's guaranteed to either get a KO or rack up at least 50%. This meta will be in favor of Pikachu. This leads me to my first tip.
For the love of all that is holy, make sure your amiibo PRACTICES against Pikachu's Final Smash.
That should be kind of obvious, but you need to make sure that your amiibo has some experience against Volt Tackle. It's unblockable and goes straight through shields, and deals 11% per hit. By the way, I highly recommend you have your amiibo train against a Pikachu amiibo - humans can't control Volt Tackle all that well, but of course, the AI can do it perfectly!
Possible Bonus Effect Setups
Hence the name of this section, I'm going to talk about some potential bonus effect setups for your amiibo. Remember, Explosive perfect shield is banned, so we can't use that. Alright, so here are some potential ideas you could go with.
This setup revolves around blocking and counterattacking. You've got Easy perfect shield, which, as you may be able to guess, allows your amiibo to more easily perfect shield. Mirror shield allows that perfect shield to deal damage to your amiibo's opponent. In fact, it reflects 25% damage of the attack that was blocked to its foe. And finally, Critical-hit capability (which I think is more "broken" than EPS, just saying) allows that counterattack to deal devastating damage.

- Critical-hit capability

Mirror shield allows that perfect shield to deal damage to your amiibo's opponent. In fact, it reflects 25% damage of the attack that was blocked to its foe. - Critical-hit capability
- Improved trade-off ability
- Lifesteal
Entrants of Dan's tournaments, I've noticed, are offense-happy. They like Lifesteal and Critical-hit capability, and this setup goes right down that alley. It works best for amiibo who have maxed out stat points (200/120/-200). Improved trade-off ability, to be very precise, will increase your amiibo's attack power by 10%, defense by 20%, ground mobility by 28%, air mobility by 18%, and jump power by 15% in exchange for 60% damage at the start of each stock. Lifesteal and Critical-hit capability then work together to recover that 60% of HP back.
- Easy perfect shield
- Improved dodge ability
- Improved escapability
This is what Glenn calls the Lame setup. I included this here because I tried it out on my Lucas amiibo and it's working very well on him so far. Basically, this set ensures that your amiibo will be a very annoying opponent to face. It'll be able to block and dodge very well, as well as escape from grabs. This isn't my top recommendation for this tournament due to how offense-heavy Dan's tourneys are in general, but the option is still here for you.
There you have it! Some general tips. I'm going to be updated this again soon but for now I need to start today's amiibo training. Good luck!
