I'm a little uncertain if this is the right place for this, since this isn't so much about training amiibo as much as it is about their AI, but I suppose you could technically keep it in mind after / during training. To clarify any possible confusion, by Fast Smash I mean a Special Smash in which the only modifier to the game being the speed set to fast.
Lucas (both amiibo and CPU) seems to be nearly incapable of recovering using PK Thunder in a fast game. If Lucas uses it, he'll do about a quarter of a circle, as if he was going to recover properly, but then he seemingly gets confused, sending his PK Thunder straight up and slowly falling to the blast line below.
I doubt there's much to do about this, since it seems to be an issue with the AI given to Lucas. Fast Smash isn't very popular, but it would be worthwhile to keep in mind that Lucas' recovery becomes more limited in that setting.
So, I guess I'd recommend keeping Lucas away from Fast Smash if his only method of recovering is the tether recovery (even if it is a very good tether). On the other hand, this might be useful if you want Lucas to use the Rope Snake more often.

Lucas and Ness both have trouble using PK Thunder if the game speed is different. If an item appears above them while they're using PK Thunder, they will abort the recovery and instead aim the ball of lightning towards whatever item spawned. Weird, huh?
