Are dittos (Mirror matches) something an amiibo already knows, or does one need to be trained to fight an amiibo of the same character?
To explain myself, I am on the fence between using charizard/lucario/mewtwo in the pokemon AWT, but Im wondering if not having two of the same amiibo for training will put me at a disadvantage.
For example, if I enter a Charizard into AWT #6 would I need to acquire a second charizard to train it against?

Not sure, but it would most likely depend on the fighting style of the amiibo. So, that would be your decision to train it to fight another, but yes, you should to ensure your Charizard is ready for everything.

The only cases for AWT6 where it comes to mind as relevant are Mewtwo and Lucario.
Mewtwo has a projectile and a reflector, so naturally any ditto matches will make both relevant.
Lucario's aura mechanic, what people chose for equipment (esp. Trade-Offs) and customs, projectile variance, and counter move are all factors that amiibo need exposure to.
Jigglypuff, Pikachu, and Charizard are comparatively straightforward in their mechanics and movesets, while Greninja's Substitute is a single factor rather than multiple factors a ditto match would teach amiibo to handle.

Training another charizard amiibo to train the other one is not necessary because in AWT5, an amiibo can learn great tactics from their owners and have the capability to face opponents they are trained to fight against. Dan's samus was able to defeat a couple of lucina's because he fought her against them in several matches. A tip of advice for you is to train and get at least one kill on your charizard with ditto matches more often and then test them against different brawlers to help him figure out, whether or not his tactics are viable or not.

Its really up to the trainer, because that's who they learn the most from.

Full disclosure here: if you mirror matched your amiibo a lot, it shouldn't have any significant problems facing its own character. I'd say don't worry about it for now, focus on beating the other opponents first.

I'd say don't worry about it for now, focus on beating the other opponents first. Be sure not to focus on only that, however. It's best for your Tourney Entry to also fight Top-Class Amiibos to up its skills and make it better-equipped for situations similar. To put it blunt, have your Pokemon Amiibo fight some of your best Amiibos to make it better.
