Honestly the best farming technique I have is using the coin army method. Go into 8 player smash and load up 8 amiibo. Put them at 99 and let them go at it. Gather up all the equipment afterward.
If you plan on entering one in a tournament, DO NOT PUT THEM IN THIS MATCH. It will dilute their abilities and training. Unless you have a powersaves, this is the best way to go. IF you have powersaves, then there is no reason to collect equipment really.
Far as getting good equipment, its RNG. Unless you get it by unlocking a challenge, then its just RNG.

You can also use PowerSaves to generate random gold/equipment as a present for your amiibo.

Wait, coin army messes with amiibo training? ...no wonder mine haven't been as good lately... Well, at least I have an excuse to buy 8 more amiibo.

Not all of us want 15 Mario trophies for doing nothing. (By using Powersaves) Also, the Coin Army method is legit - it's also some of the only way of getting challenge-based equipment without completing the challenge. I would say outside that... If you're wondering about the highest stats possible for equipment, it can cap at about 120 positive points. Which can go anywhere. I can be 40/70/10, 20/80/20, 40/40/40, 120/200/-200, and 60/60/0 to name a few.
As for equipment farming techniques, it depends on what system you have. Playing through Classic Mode on harder difficulties can be extra rewarding, so there's that. But pretty much any game mode besides normal Smash will give you equipment items as a reward. Smash Tour, Smash Run, and unlocking spaces on the Challenge Wall are just a few ways you can grab equipment drops and rewards.
If you don't actually feel like putting in work, you can always have your amiibo battle it out in a 99-stock match. All you need to do here is just wait it out and collect the loot later when you scan them. Keep in mind though, they may turn stupid if you decide to use this method, so remember that if you choose to use that method.

Well, the highest I ever got was a around mid-80s, so probably 90s is the max. Of course, I could be wrong, but I'm pretty close.

Thanks I needed to confirm getting +89 was normal OH, that's what you meant. I would have to say that +30-40 is the average points you get from equipment, so you actually have a really strong equipment piece there!
