My Robin is a nut-job. She's so passive and only charges Thorons all day. My Shulk isn't that bad, but I've tried four times to get him to use his Monado Arts correctly. At first, he does, but then he starts to slacken with them, only using Jump. I've been forced to upgrade his defense, and these huge mistakes he's been making lately have cost him his place in my team in the AWT #4. He was originally in Marth's place, but he just can't seem to get things straight. How do I solve these two screw-ups? Thanks in advance.

From what I've tested, there's a good way to fix Robin. Have them team up with you as Robin against a Donkey Kong. Then, use attacks that you want Robin to use more, and if they see you using them, they will grow to adapt to using it. Tested on Pikachu, and it works very well, and now it doesn't spam Thunder Burst as much as it used to. Do it with Shulk too, and you might see a lot of improvements with them both.

Ah, I see you know of Amiibo Dan's method. Yes, I enjoy that method greatly, but there is a downside to it. It sometimes doesn't work if the Amiibo is very powerful. I tried to get my Little Mac to combo into his smash attacks, but he didn't learn a thing since all he did to the DK was run up and kill it. This method is less effective the stronger/more idiotic the Amiibo just so happens to be.

Robin: I don't see what's wrong here. If Robin's charging Thorons all day and hitting opponents, that's fine. You might want to teach her to add Arcfire to the mix, too. I've trained Robin before, and wanted him to play defense. When he started acting passive, however, I shifted my intentions and instead taught him to play passively. You know what? He's really good now.
Shulk: The problem you're having is the only reason why he isn't S Rank. He automatically prioritizes Jump and Speed to the point where he won't use other ones consistently. It's a huge pain. And unfortunately, the only way around this is to continue to use Buster, Smash, and Shield, and allow him to hit you when he does have Buster and Smash activated.

Mind you the only attack my Pikachu ever used was Thunder Burst and NOTHING ELSE.

Great points from both of you. Thing is, I do not like how passive my Robin is acting, mostly because all he does is walk away, and turn around and shoot a Thoron at close range. Key word = close. They shield and punish. It'd be great if she used like, for say, Arcthunder at close range, which'd be more useful, but Thoron is the only thing. The thing about Shulk, I guess I'll just have to grin and bear it. Hey, look at my profile photo. I guess I already am. Huh.

On one final note, what would be good custom specials for both of them? I heard Fire Wall is pretty good.

My Shulk uses Decisive Monado Arts, Back Slash Charge, and Power Vision.
My Robin has all of their original moves.

This is so late, but y'know.
Success is everything in terms of an amiibo's move usage. If your Robin keeps hittin' ya with those things in particular, why should she use other moves when she wins with those?
If she's not winning, you could try influencing her to use other moves in 1v1's and team battles. Just block what you don't want her to use in 1v1's, and show her what you do in team battles.
Shulk might be just a matter of influence. Play a couple team matches with him using your Manado Arts and you should be a good to go!
