I enjoyed playing through Undertale.
The game seemed to take into account all the possible paths the player might take, with most entities in the game having more than 1 thing to say for each interaction. Be it talking to the same NPC twice or ACTing the same thing twice in a fight, most characters will react differently, which was interesting.
Also, the save system being recognized by the game as a part of the story was fascinating to me, as I had never seen a game do that before. Seeing Undertale take into account what I did BEFORE loading my save and then having major characters reacting to that made my experience with the characters in the game stand out when compared to other games..
I believe it's the capability of choosing how you played the game and making each possibility as interesting as the other would be what granted Undertale such popularity. Each player will have a unique experience, and then you can play it again and experience something new.

I have a job, and it's as riel as it gets. Somewhere, across space and time, a rip forms. It's very presence becomes known through out the universe. Natural disasters violently tear across the land. Civilization as we know it collapses. Entire galaxies are destroyed as if it were child play. Among the death and destruction, a single voice can be heard loud and clear by all, reminding them that, somewhere, somehow, someone made a really bad pun. SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANS! This could not be more punny. *Wink wink nudge nudge*

Now let's talk about the game's most memorable character. Of course! How could we all forget about Mr. Cubical Brick, right there behind the human.

Love the story, and that it breaks the 4th wall. Really gets to you.

The only thing I don't like about Undertale is the fandom. It can get a bit...disturbing, especially the fanart *shudder*

That can be said to 90% of the fanbases though.

Ok, I played this game and found it...quite poor, even by Indie standards. The Story is meh, the writing is highschool-tier, the jokes are preschool-tier, the spritework is ugly, the backgrounds are mediocre, the maps are slapdick, the puzzles are slapdick-er, and the battle system is one part Twinbee, one part Mario Golf slider. Undertale's only redeeming quality is its music...which is the only reason why this game has sold as well as it has, seeing as how Toby Fox already had a quite substantial built-in fanbase who recognized and enjoyed his songs from the webcomic Homestuck. One of my buddies put it this way:
Fred: Now let's see who the Undertale Fanbase really is! (Removes mask) Daphne: Gasp! It's the Homestuck Fanbase! Velma: With a few extra warts on its face... Fanbase: And I woulda gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling kids and your dog! Shaggy: Like, can you really call yourself a success when you're riding the coattails of a collaborator, Scoob? 'Scoooooby Dooby DOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!'
