Announcing the Weekly Amiibo Skirmish
Hosted by Bysshe
Coming soon to the Internet near you, a weekly tournament with the sole purpose of regular data collection.
Hello everyone! If you haven't seen me around, my name is Bysshe. I've been in the Amiibo metagame for a few months now, and I'm really enjoying it. Something that's always bothered me is that we only have one format for tournaments: whatever Amiibo Dan wants. This isn't to knock Dan, he's a great dude and does a great tournament, but I've got a few problems with some things.
1. His tournaments take a long time. This is because Dan is great and streams the tours for us, which I love watching. However, this means that it takes a super long time and is very inconvenient for Dan. Just look at the AWT7. I took three days for the first two rounds, and now, due to tragic life circumstances (prayers for Dan), we're still on hold. Again, I'm not knocking Dan. He's got a life, and streaming takes an insane amount of set-up and work to do well, which he does. It also just takes a loooong time for everyone.
2. Every AWT so far has had a theme of some kind that isn't giving us accurate results. The upcoming AWT8 is going to be the most objective one yet, which is super hype, but this is one tournament. Will others be like this? Who can say?
3. They are semi-frequent? I think I heard Dan say he does them bi-weekly? But all the same, with weird themes for the first 7 of them, the data gathered is kind of skewed.
What I'm Proposing
I suggest, as you've already guessed from the graphic above, that we start holding weekly tournaments with the same format so that we can actually see results of our training more frequently, gather a lot more data, and maintain a kind of hype in our community.
Here is the format I suggest:
2 Stocks
8:00 Time
No Items
Best of Three
Any Amiibo will be eligible to enter.
Any equipment combination is legal as well, as long as it is legal by the game's standards. (No 200+ in every stat, etc.)
Staging:
1st Round: Final Destination
2nd Round: Battlefield
3rd Round: Flip for stage.
What "Flip for stage" means is that when you enter the tournament, you'll send me your .bin, your username, and which legal stage you would want to have for your third round. If we get to the third, I'll flip a coin, and based on that, I'll pick the stage.
Legal Stages:
FD
Battlefield
Dreamland
Duck Hunt
Any Omega Stage
(I selected these stages because they are most competitive stages the 3DS has to offer.)
How Will I Run The Tournament?
Easy! I have a Powersaves and Powertag. Entrants send me their amiibo data and then I input it onto my Powertag and play them against each other. It's basically an amiiqo, just not as efficient for like, half the cost.
Here's where the speed comes in. I should be able to run the entire tournament in a single day. I will not stream the tournament. That's kind of the point. This isn't so much a tournament to watch as it is to gather data and just determine the best amiibo and amiibo trainers.
Every tournament will have a Challonge page to track results, and I've also created a Twitter to live tweet results, @weeklyamiibotor (https://twitter.com/WeeklyAmiiboTor). This will give us at least some feeling of "live" to this tournament.
I will also always upload the final fight to YouTube, and any other interesting replays, just to have additional stuff online.
Why Have This and Why You Should Enter
We all want our metagame to develop, and right now, there just isn't enough competition to really develop. People train and train weird amiibo to do well and then they never get noticed. This is a great platform that will let all amiibo and new or nervous trainers ease into the big tournaments like the AWT.
Most importantly, this will also give us an amazing chance to gather real, quantifiable data. That's always the been one of this community's biggest faults: most of our "data" is totally subjective or based on anecdotal information. There just isn't enough true, objective data out there to form a true opinion on which Amiibo is best, what training techniques are really working, and to form an effective tier list, although Dojo's is looking pretty accurate. It'd be nice to have more information to support it.
How to Enter
No later than the day before the tournament, which is looking like I'll do them on Tuesdays, you need to email me your .bin of your amiibo just like you do for AWTs. The official email is:
WeeklyAmiiboSkirmish@gmail.com
You need to include:
The Username you want on the bracket
The .bin (duh)
Your Round 3 stage pick (if wanted, you don't have to have a pick)
Conclusion
I plan on starting this as soon as we have enough people for a decent sized bracket, at least 8. Probably not this Tuesday, but next Tuesday, unless I just get a ton of interest in the next three days.
Thank you for reading, and I hope you're as excited as I am! Be sure to follow @weeklyamiibotor on Twitter for up to the minute details!
